Florence Andresen (1936 - 2019)

Glen Cove Teacher, High School Principal & Superintendent of Schools

Felix Sangenito (1920 - 2005)

Musician, Teacher

Felix Sangenito, of Glen Cove, passed away on Oct. 21, 2005 at age 85. Mr. Sangenito was born July 9, 1920, in Italy, and moved to Long Island when he was 9. He attended St. Patrick's School in Glen Cove and Glen Cove High School. After he broke his leg playing football, his mother wouldn't allow him to continue the sport, so he took up the trumpet.

He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in September 1941 and played in a band as a base bugler at Randolph Airfield in San Antonio, Texas, where he performed for Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, among other noted dignitaries, until 1945.

After the war, Mr. Sangenito attended Hofstra University and The Juilliard School of Music. By 1947 he had become an educator, serving as band director and instrumental music teacher at several Long Island schools, including some in Glen Cove, Bayville and East Norwich. He also created music programs for disabled children at the Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh, a division of the Nassau Board of Cooperative Services.

He often performed in his community and led the Felix Sangenito Italian Band, which played Italian classics at feasts, including the St. Rocco Feast in Glen Cove and the San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy. The band gained some fame, appearing in the '70s on "The Mike Douglas Show," and Sangenito briefly appeared as a band member in Martin Scorsese's film "Mean Streets" in 1973. After performing on the soundtrack for the film, he was contacted by Francis Ford Coppola's father to appear in "The Godfather: Part II."

Felix Sangenito retired in 1979, but continued to lead bands at Veterans Day ceremonies and marching in Memorial Day parades in Glen Cove until 2004. He also was an avid boater and traveled statewide in his motor home.

He celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife, Jayne, on Oct. 15. Besides his wife and son Paul, he is survived by three daughters, Marilyn of Glen Cove (Class of 1968), Janet Fagal of upstate Skaneateles, and Donna Squillace of Cold Spring Harbor, as well as five grandchildren.

William Mulvihill (1923 - 2004)

Authur, Teacher, Historian, Environmentalist

William P. Mulvihill, a native son of Sag Harbor passed away on September 17, 2004 at the age of 81 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Mulvihill was a teacher of history and creative writing for over 30 years as well as a published novelist. He made his home in Glen Cove.

Mr. Mulvihill was the son of Anna and Daniel Mulvihill and the brother of Dolores M. Zebrowski. He and his sister established the Anna and Daniel Mulvihill Preserve in memory of their parents. The Preserve is a prized parcel consisting of 75 acres in Noyac. It was acquired by the Town of Southampton on March 26, 2003 and dedicated as a preserve on June 15, 2003. Both Mr. Mulvihill and his sister were present at the dedication.

The Mulvihill property is rich in flora and fauna. There are two sizeable spring fed ponds, stands of oak, beech and white pines and scores of rare and native birds.

William Mulvihill was an admitted curmudgeon and "anti-growth fanatic", who wanted to see any land remain as undeveloped as possible. "I don't like to see farm land or forest land destroyed," Mr.. Mulvihill said. "I'm in anguish every time I see a new house being built.” Mr.. Mulvihill hoped that the Mulvihill Preserve would be a stepping stone to saving the local environment before it gets destroyed like the area around his home. "People come out to the East End for its bucolic aspects and pristine water," Mr.. Mulvihill said. "If we continue to overdevelop it's going to wind up like Nassau County and there's no point being active down there because it's all gone.”

The Mulvihill Preserve stands as a testament to William Mulvihill’s passion for the environment. Environmentalists can look to this piece of land with confidence knowing that it will be there for generations to admire and experience.

William Mulvihill is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Mary Marceau, two daughters, Nancy Mulvihill and MaryAnn Mulvihill-Decker, sister Dolores Zebrowski of Sag Harbor and sons-in-law Charles Tongren and Daniel Mulvihill-Decker, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his Chocolate Labrador Retriever “Lady”.
