On Saturday, 24 October, the Class of 1968 dedicated a tree to memorialize our departed classmates. The tree is planted on the lawn in front of the high school, at a location to the left of the main doors. The dedication ceremony, attended by the local media, relatives, and classmates, involved reading the names of those who have passed on and having both friends and relatives tie lavender ribbons bearing their names around the tree. |
Our 30th Year Reunion took place over the October weekend from Friday evening (10/23) through Sunday (10/25). Friday evening 'til the wee hours of Saturday: part of the gang met at the North Shore Cafe. There was a competing reunion of + or - 50-types at the Soundview Cafe in Glen Cove at the same time. We sent some of our crowd down there to check it out around 1 am, but they returned with the news that the other reunion was winding down. There was still a die-hard group of 'Sixty-Eighters' at the North Shore Cafe when this correspondent left at 2:30 am. Saturday afternoon, Homecoming Weekend at the high school saw a capacity crowd turn out at J. C. Maiden field behind the school to watch Glen Cove's Big Red football team roll over Great Neck North 42-6. The Class of '68 congregated by the entrance to the field, no doubt in order to make a quick getaway if things turned ugly. |
At half time, we met at a spot in front of the building where the high school grounds crew had planted our Sunset Maple (see above). There was quite a turnout of classmates, friends and relatives, and we've received a lot of positive comments in the community about this. Saturday evening at the Villa Victor in Jericho was a nice affair, but the time flew by. We did get a Class photo taken by Island Photography, and copies are available. We also had the photographer take a set of photos reuniting those who attended elementary school together in the 'early days'. Deasy, Landing, Coles and East Schools were well-represented. |
At midnight the word was passed to shift to another venue. A good crowd packed the Country Inn in Locust Valley. Anyone know who was the last to leave? My recollection stops around 3 am. Sunday Brunch was well attended at the Glen Cove Golf Course. The Tiffany House (you may recall as the after-hours rendezvous from the 10-year reunion), has been redone and renamed the SoundView Cafe, no doubt because it looks across the golf course and into L.I. Sound - a magnificent view. The entire weekend was a '10' in terms of the weather and no one wanted to leave. But leave we all did - with promises to stay in touch and get together more frequently... |
Here is a fairly complete list of those who partied Saturday evening at the Villa Victor. There were others who joined us throughout the weekend at other venues. |
